Dej is a municipality in the county of Cluj, Transylvania, Romania, consisting of the component localities Dej, Ocna Dejului, Cave, Pintic and Șomcutu Mic. It is located 57 km northeast of the city of Cluj-Napoca, at the confluence between the Someșul Mare and Someșul Mic rivers.
The city is bounded on the east by the Dealul Florilor neighborhood, on the south by St. Petul Dealul, on the northeast by the Cuzdrioara commune, on the west by the village of Jichișul de Jos, and on the southwest by the Ocna Dejului district. The locality is the node of the terrestrial roads and of the railways with the stations Dej and Dej Triaj.
Neolithic ceramic fragments were discovered in the city area in Bungăr forest, on Sfantu Petru hill and on Cichegy hill in Viile Dejului.
The remains of the Roman road and the bridge over Someș were discovered, which made the connection between the cities on the border. Another important discovery from the Roman era is the water supply pipeline that goes to the central area of the city; a rustic villa was discovered in Pintic, and on the hill of Cabdic (Rompas), a Roman votive altar and a Roman copper coin were accidentally found.
