Medias Medies earlier, is the second largest city in Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania. The city is situated in the middle of the Târnava sea at a distance of 39 km and 41 km from Sighisoara Blaj.
In 1267, the first documentary mention Mediesy appears. The settlement is closely related to the name of a tribe Székely ninth century.
In the twelfth century and the thirteenth-century Hungarian kings Medias German colonists settled in the area, known as the Saxons.
From 1900 Mediaş becomes an important center for mining of methane gas. In the nineteenth century, the old craft centers here have turned into factories and were first produced here the first crystal and Romanian email.
According to the 2002 census, the population is 63,153 Medias and from ethnically were: 53 376 Romanian, 6554 Hungarian, Roma 1959, 1150 German, 114 other nationalities.
Mediaş today is a picturesque town that feels the combination of old and new, with a sequence of architectural styles from Gothic to Renaissance and neoclassical, the Baroque and Secession (Jugendstil). Medias historic city center is like a open air museum. The monuments are unique medieval castle in Transylvania market. The city has a history of over seven centuries, is one of the oldest cities in Romania.
The pages of the novel "Dracula", the Irish writer Bram Stoker stated that the wedding of Count Wallach, the wine was "the golden Medias. Medias and its surroundings are known today, given the fame of old wine county, symbol of the city emblem, the area was dubbed the old "Wine Country" or "Weinland", as shown in the map humanist Johannes Honterus (XVI century).
