Székelyudvarhely is a municipality in the county. The city is located 105 km south-east of Targu Mures and crossed the Târnava Great.
The first mention of the city dates from 1301 with the name Uduord. Name City indicates that the bailiff had his Szeklers headquarters here.
It is assumed that the city was a free city before the fourteenth century. In 1357 there was held the first Diet of the Szeklers. Fortress (castle) in the city was built in 1492 using materials of construction of a monastery. John Sigismund, Hungarian prince of Transylvania, took possession of the city after winning a battle against Szeklers. Between 1562 and 1565 funded the construction of the new Principality of Transylvania castle Székelytámadt (literally, "attacked Secuiesc"), which was interpreted as a humiliation brought Szeklers Hungarian troops defeated in battle with Prince. Szeklers destroyed the castle in 1599, when they fought alongside the Wallachian prince Michael the Brave. His reconstruction was ordered only after the year 1621 the new prince Gabriel Bethlen. In 1616, Ali Pasha Castle burned to the ground, and in 1704 the Austrian General Tiege robbed. Finally, the castle was partially demolished Székely, on the order of Lörinc Pekry, who recaptured. Since then called Csonkavár (truncated castle ') and lasted until today.
The city was exempt from tax in 1558 by Queen Isabella.
In 1876 he became resident Odorhei County, which was formed by merging three Székely. During the interwar period was Odorhei county.
