Vișeu de Sus (in German Oberwischau, in Hungarian Felsővisó) is a city in Maramureș county, Transylvania, Romania. It is located in the northeast of the county of Maramureș, in the Depression of Maramureș, at the confluence between Valea Vișeului and Valea Vaserului.
The city of Vişeu de Sus has an historical and cultural load of an impressive value, due mainly to the favorable geographical position, being located from an ethno-cultural point of view, at the confluence between the Visa Valley and the Vaser Valley. It is part of the Land of Maramures, also known as the "Historical Maramures". Tourists arriving in the Upper Visas can visit at least 8 locations classified as historical monuments, admire the collections of the local museum or participate in the many cultural or recreational events that the city hosts throughout the year.
A local legend tells that the town was founded by a logger, whose son died struck by a wood in the forest. In the memory of his son, he built a church on the site of the tragic accident, and around the church the locality called at the beginning "Between Rivers" would have grown, because it stretched between the river Vişeu and Vaser.
Many of the traditions and customs of the place are still related to the squatters present in the area. For them, Christmas is still the most important holiday of the year, which is why the houses are adorned with fir branches, and the whole community gathers on Christmas Eve for Christmas service, which starts at midnight. After its completion, the caroling begins, usually attended by the whole family, and carols are sung that still contain small words.
The value of the area of which Vişeu de Sus belongs is consecrated at national level, both through natural endowment, rich in unique natural phenomena, species diversity and scientific importance, as well as through cultural heritage. The city has a geographical position located at the border of some areas of tourist interest and the intersection of some very important tourist routes and circuits: Vişeului Valley, Vaserului Valley next to Mocăniţă, Izei Valley, Cailor-Borşa Waterfall, Rodnei Mountains Nature Reserve, Maramureş Mountains Natural Park - Natura 2000 site, Narcissus meadow on Sahlean Mountain. Vişeu de Sus is one of the newest resorts in Romania, officially recognized in 2011.
