Vulcan (formerly called Jiu-Vaidei-Vulcan) is a municipality in Hunedoara county, Transylvania, Romania, consisting of the component localities Dealu Babii, Jiu-Paroșeni and Vulcan (residence). It has a population of 22,906 inhabitants (2011). It was declared a municipality in December 2003.
Vulcan Municipality is located in the southern part of Hunedoara County, at the foot of the Vâlcan Mountains, in the Petroşani Depression, being crossed by the national road DN 66 A, which connects Petroșani and Valea de Pisesti.
Geographically, Vulcan Municipality is located in the depressed area between Retezat and Valcan Mountains (belonging to the Southern Carpathians), in the area dominated south by the Straja peak (1868 m) and Pasul Vâlcan (1620 m). The Petroșani Depression, which houses the Vulcan Municipality, is also closed by the four mountain massifs: Retezat, Valcan, Tureanu and Parang.
Activities specific to the area: mining, tourist services, textile industry, trade, wood processing industry.
