Portiţei is located on a narrow strip of sand between the Black Sea and Lake Goloviţa in the Danube Delta.
Originally a fishing village, Gura Portiţei (port) is known today as one of the most remote (and quiet) Romanian seaside tourist destination, an alternative to Vama Veche has become too popular and crowded in recent years. Access is usually by boat from Jurilovca, Tulcea; with special vehicles can be reached on the coastal road or from Vadu, Constanta, on the Periboina or from St. George, Tulcea.
The name was originally linked to the existing communication between the lake and the Black Sea Goloviţa closed in the 70s, which has turned into a lake Goloviţa closed under water desalination. Lake north of Lake Razim communicate (free) and south of Lake Sinoe, through a system of locks. The area is part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.
