Ramnicu Valcea Municipality located in the Carpathian-Danube-Functional Oltean, a unit of territory (counties of Mehedinti, Gorj, Olt, Valcea, Dolj) is characterized by a network of communities formed amid a dense network of water, the fertile plains along which were installed early settlements and ancient ways of communication strategy.
City is first mentioned as of 4 September 1389, when Mircea the Elder mentioned in a charter that is in "the city called Ramnic reign ...."

The city is known due to performance sport, handball. "Handball Club" Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea, a club founded in 1973, won the national title 15 times since 1989 until now, the Romanian Cup 13 times since 1984, and the Romanian Supercup in 2007. Internationally IHF won two Cups (1984, 1989), Cup Winners Cup (2007) European Supercup (1984) and Champions Trophy (2007).
